Coaching in Ontario

NCCP Coaching Courses
The Coaching Association of Canada has developed a new model for coaches education.
The new NCCP model is made up of three streams and a total of eight contexts, each with its own coaching requirements. Each sport is responsible for identifying how many of the eight contexts are relevant to their sport. Below are the descriptions of the Streams, the Contexts, the courses offered by Ontario Water Polo and the Models created by Water Polo Canada.

Stream 1 – Community Sport
Coaches in the Community Sport stream typically become involved on a voluntary (and often short-term) basis because their children participate in a sport. They tend to work with participants of all ages who are new to the sport. The Community Sport stream has two coaching contexts: Initiation and Ongoing participation.

Water Polo NCCP Community Coach Award – has been piloted in Toronto and Ottawa and is waiting for full content approval from the CAC. This is an 8-10 hour course and will provide the coaches the basics of skills and tactics while stressing the importance of athlete focused attention.

If your club would like to host a Community coach award please contact the OWP office.

Ontario Water Polo ‘I Love Water Polo Coaches award ‘I Love Water Polo’ (ILWP) is an introductory, recreational water polo program for boys and girls ages 8-13 (players younger than 8 may be considered based on an assessment by the coach).

In April 2005, the 'I Love Water Polo’ Program won An Award of Excellence from Parks and Recreation Ontario.  ‘ILWP’ is a non-contact version of the game of Water Polo designed to teach skills
Ontario Water Polo Association would like to recognize the contribution of the Ottawa Titans Water Polo and Head Coach David Hart, for the use of their program design and content.
The ILWP coaches award was introduced at the Ontario Water Polo Annual General meeting in June 2006.

* Make it a weekend and run an ILWP and Community Coaches awards together.

Stream 2 – Competition
Coaches in the Competition stream usually have previous coaching experience or are former athletes in the sport. They tend to work with athletes over the long term to improve performance, often in preparation for provincial, national, and international competitions. The Competition stream has three coaching contexts: Introduction, Development, and High performance.

In the Competition – Introduction context, Water Polo Canada has decided to divide the context into two separate workshop themes. One workshop relates to the preparing the coach to run an effective practice and the other workshop relates to coaching effectively in preparation for a game and during a game. Logically, the workshops are entitled ‘The Practice’ and ‘The Game’. These workshops provide relevant training for the coach to be prepared to work with entry level athletes in the Competition – Introduction context

The Practice – Water Polo Canada made the decision to integrate some of the materials that relate to the NCCP Competition – Introduction context. WPC has integrated the following modules in this context – ‘Plan a Practice’, ‘Teaching and Learning’ and ‘Analyze Performance – Skill’. This will allow coaches to attend Water Polo specific workshops and utilize new knowledge and skills in a water polo setting with water polo athletes and their coaching.

The Gamewill be piloted in the fall of 2006 in Regina. The game should be ready for full launch in April 2007. ‘The Game’ will have the NCCP Planning a Sports Program module. The course will focus on Goalies, 2m and 2m guard positions, preparing for the game, coaching during the game, performance assessment and how it guides Planning a Sports Program.

Ethicsto become certified in the Competition- Introduction context the coach must successfully complete the Make Ethical Decisions Module. This Module is available through a learning facilitator (contact OWP office for names and contact information for Learning Facilitators in your area) or as an online evaluation.
As well all Ontario Water Polo and WPC Canada coaches must have their Make Ethical Decisions Module completed prior to participating at any provincial or national championships.

Stream 3 – Instruction
Coaches in the Instruction stream must have sport-specific skills and training, whether coaching at the beginner or advanced skill levels. Many are former participants in the sport. Water Polo Canada has not started any work on the Instruction stream.

The official ONLINE newsletter of the National Coaching Certification Program, Inside Coaching keeps you informed of NCCP activities and provide you with a snapshot of the ongoing progress in the transition of NCCP to a competency based system.
